When it comes to looking at how SEO works, it is important to recognise it is a comprehensive topic. People study SEO for many years and it is a concept that is always changing too! That said, it is important to have a basic knowledge of Search Engine Optimisation if you want your business to be successful.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is exactly how it sounds – it is the steps you go through to optimise your website to be seen on search engines. There are millions of websites, some of them will be targeting the same customer bases as you. When people search via the likes of Google, you want them to be able to find your website rather than that of your competitor. By taking steps to optimise your website, you can help to make sure this happens.

How SEO Works

If you want to undertake SEO yourself, be prepared to do lots of research to make sure you get it right. Also, SEO is something that adapts and changes consistently, so you’ll need to make sure you keep on top of things so your hard work doesn’t go to waste. If you want to be found on Google, then the first thing you need to do is create a website worth finding. Take time to invest in your content, ensure it is accurate and up to date and links out to over valuable resources if this is appropriate.

A blog is a fantastic way to ensure that your website always offers fresh content, which is something Google loves! However, you can’t just write a blog on anything – you need to be putting out high-quality content, relevant to the topic of your business or service.

You should do some research into what people are looking for on Google and how this relates to your business. You can then make sure that you include these search phrases in your website content. That way, when Google finds your website it knows which people to send your way.  You might want to look up how to place these keywords in the correct places too!

How To Get Highly Ranked on Google

Being deemed worthy of the front page of Google is a lot about the website that you have and the content you’re putting on it – Google wants to send people to high-quality websites. You should also look at which websites link to you and how you might be able to improve on this – after all, if highly regarded websites link to yours, that has to be a good thing! Updating your content regularly, linking to other websites, using image descriptions, tags and categories all come under the ‘how SEO works’ umbrella and should be something you give thought to.
